Barber shop or salon?

I'm 21 with really thick black hair. I've always kept my hair cut short. I used to go to the barber shop but now I cut it myself. I want to get a longer haircut. Maybe like a skater type hairstyle. Should I go to the barber shop or a salon?

Salon, they are better with longer hair.

Salon because barbers only do 1 style - short back and sides with variations.  Barbers are trained  it's just that  hairdressers can advise better on styles.

Go with pictures if you can. They probably know what you want anyway.
