Pretty soon I'll have to write a paper in english about Barbie.

Yes, the doll. We were supposed to pick who we thought was the most influential fictional character/toy/etc. and for lack of a better idea, I chose Barbie at the last minute. What are some reasons you think Barbie is influential? It can be positive or negative. In your answer try to get at least one of each, please. [:

  1. Few people remember that Barbie was meant to be a marketable toy when she was released in 1959 to fill a perceived gap between baby dolls and paper dolls.  Her icon status was probably more a thing of timing in the US that saw an explosion and interest in all things youthful including JFK, music (Elvis and then the Beatles), movies (beach pictures), etc.  Barbie was a huge success and most mothers bought the dolls for their children with little intimidation that she represented anything more than a toy.  Remember that cap pistols also had not acquired their stigma of representing forms of violence either.

It took a later generation to read all sorts of things into Barbie.  To some, she could instill and promote a myriad of poor role model choices.  Maybe this was a sign of a generation that needed to find their answers on a clinical couch, rather than from watching Ozzie and Harriet.

You've selected an interesting topic and there's probably enough to fill a book on it with enough thought.  I wish you well on it.

  2. Barbie is iconic, she's the all-American girl.  Of course in the beginning she was just pretty, and rich!  And ended up giving some girls (apparently) a bad self image because, well, how many girls do you know who look like Barbie?  So Matel made her a pilot, she's been a doctor and a nurse, a veterinarian, a mom/sister/wife, (they even have Barbie grandparents).  She's been athletes of all kinds, she's taken up motorcycles, she's dabbled in costuming.  The list goes on and on.  So asides from having a body that's unachievable by by flesh and blood standards, she's sort of a roll model.  Wow, none of that mentioned WHY Barbie is influential.  lol!  I suck!  Good luck on your paper!
