Question:

Barbie or Barbie type vintage doll with hard plastic hair?

My mom keeps talking about how she has a Barbie so old in the attic somewhere that it has hard plastic hair. Meaning the type of hair Ken has, where it is just molded plastic to his head and not strands of hair. I don't know if it was pony tail style or long. I couldn't find anything on a hard plastic haired Barbie doll, so I'm wondering if she's just forgotten what she owns or if she's mistaking the doll for something other then Barbie. It was from when she was a kid in the 60s or even into the 70s.

Any suggestions on what she could be talking about?

  1. There were two Barbies produced with molded painted hair.  They were Fashion Queen and Miss Barbie.  Actually, they were meant to wear wigs.  Three wigs were included with either the doll or the head (you could buy just the Fashion Queen head with wigs).

The dolls weren't sold without the wigs but there were probably a lot of these where the doll survived long after the wigs. The dolls were also sold and packaged with the wigs included but not on the doll so you saw her molded hair.  These are probably two reasons why most people remember these dolls as having molded painted hair.  You didn't tend to see a lot of them actually wearing the wigs.
