Barbie question, one of her friends?

When I was really young, like early nineties, I had a Barbie that was kinda Asian/hawaiin, and she came with an orange tinsely hula skirt (so I'm assuming she was an island girl). I am looking for her name everywhere but I can't find it. I swore her name was Janet, but my mom said that she was a black doll. I have no clue. Any ideas? Much appreciated, thank you.

  1. Definitely, Hula Hair series.  They were a series of articulated Barbies.  I believe there was a Kira(?) in that series that used the Oriental headsculpt.

There was a black version, too.

  2. THE 90’S NEW FAMILY LITTLE KIDS

    STACIE 1992-present, Barbie’s new sister

TODD 1991, 1993-1994, Barbie’s new brother, twin to Stacie

KELLY 1995, Barbie’s new baby sister

    JANET 1994, Stacie’s friend

    WHITNEY 1994, Stacie’s friend

    BECKY 1996-present, Kelly’s friend

    CHELSIE 1996-present, Kelly’s friend

    MELODY 1996-present, Kelly’s friend

    DEIDRE 1997-present, Kelly’s friend

    JENNY 1997-present, Kelly’s friend

    MARISSA 1997-present, Kelly’s friend

    TOMMY 1997-present, Kelly’s friend

You could research images of the barbies and compare them to yours

  3. I think Sarah is right, the doll you had was Hula Hair Christy.

Janet is the name Mattel used for a smaller doll who was a friend of Stacey, one of Barbie's younger sisters.

  4. Around 1996-1997 there was a Barbie doll released called 'Hula Hair Barbie'.

She had two friends, 'Hula Hair Teresa' and Hula Hair 'Christie'.

Hula Hair Barbie had long blonde hair with pink and yellow streaks, and a gold hula skirt.

'Hula Hair Teresa' (Barbie's Hispanic friend) had brown hair with purple, blue and pink streaks with a blue hula skirt.

I haven't been able to find an image for 'Hula Hair Christie' (Barbie's African American friend) but I am quite sure this may be the doll you are looking for.

However, after some research I have found that there was another doll released in Europe that was a version of Barbie but with tanned skin like Teresa and brown in her hair (still labelled as Barbie). And I also found an image from the back of the box on one of these dolls which showed varying colours of the dolls skirts.

I must say though, I am 100% positive you are looking for a 'Hula Hair' Barbie doll of some kind since she definately had the 'tinsely' skirt.

  5. I have a strong feeling it could be Kira, she's the Asian friend of Barbie. Either that, she could also be Hawaiian Fun Kira or even Polynesian Barbie from Dolls of the World series.

  6. Sounds like Theresa.

I had one that was wearing a similiar outfit and her name was Theresa.

  7. Teresa
