  1. Historically, from Germany.

    Chemically, from barbituric acid.

    Professionally, from chemists.

    Economically, from pharmacies.

  2. The automatic category picker thought "Barbiturates" was a surname, picked this category and you agreed. You were too trusting, dear. Computers are faster than humans but not as smart. You should not trust them. You'll end up sending your life savings to some thief in Nigeria, hoping he will send you $5,000,000 (five MILLION) to hide under your mattress until he can retrieve it and split it with you. It will be a long, cold wait.

    I'm either smarter than you or more experienced. Probably both. Better looking for sure. Most genealogists are devilishly handsome. I Googled

    History

    Barbituric acid was first synthesised on December 5, 1864, by German researcher Adolf von Baeyer. This was done by condensing urea (an animal waste product) with diethyl malonate (an ester derived from the acid of apples). There are several stories about how the substance got its name. The most likely story is that von Baeyer and his colleagues went to celebrate their discovery in a tavern where the town's artillery garrison were also celebrating the day of Saint Barbara — the patron saint of artillerists. An artillery officer is said to have christened the new substance by amalgamating Barbara with urea.[1]

    ==================

    Urea comes from urine, which is what comes out when you pee.
