  1. John  Robert Powers is a worse SCAM.  Barbizon has a terrible reputation. If it is not too expensive, do it. At least you will know how to model and can find a different agent if you need it.

  2. I actually went with Barbizon years ago. They aren't a scam company, but I'm not sure if they are as legit as people may think either. I will tell you what to expect and you can decide for yourself.

The thing is with modeling/acting you have to be serious about it and it takes a lot of work; I mean work. When you are with Barbizon you are auditioning to be in a school and you do have to pay them a lot of money. They tell you that agencies want someone with experience. In fact there are other agencies who have similar schools, but there are also lots of agencies who will hire you with out any training. Barbizon is a school affiliated with Royal Model Management located in Chicago.

At the end of the training or school they will set you up with a photo shoot. You will get what is called a comp card. You will also be paying for this photo shoot and comp. card. They told us that they would provide someone to do our makeup and hair, and no one showed up. I ended up doing the other girls hair and makeup.

The only job I got out of them is handing out postcards at a fair asking if they want to be a model.

You will then need to make a resume and send your resume with these comp cards to agencies all over to get work (and I mean sending to 50 different agencies). If these agencies like what they see they will call you into a interview. If they want you they will sign you. It is your responsibility to call and see if there are any available jobs. You are constantly working to try and get yourself with new agencies and calling back agencies to see if there is any work. Barbizon does not do any of this for you. All they do is train you and send you off on your own. Most people that come out of that school do not work or become models nor actors. However, it is not Barbizon fault because it is your responsibility to find work.

Barbizon will tell you about two auditions after training one in New York and one in LA. This is where the stars they advertise got started with them made it big, ie Katie Holmes, Jessica Beale, etc. At this audition you are performing in front of producers, agents, managers. It is great exposure, however you will also be paying for this trip.

The truth is yes there are some people that became famous from paying a whole lot of money to this agency, but only a few out of thousands over the years. The choice is up to you. You do get some training out of them, but not actual jobs per se.

In total Barbizon costs thousands of dollars. Many people in the industry believe that you should not have to pay anyone money to be in their agency. I would look at local modeling agencies in your area or surrounding cities and see if you can directly apply through them directly without having to spend so much money before hand, because six months down the line you will still be in the same boat where you will have to apply to these agencies by yourself. Also talk to other modeling agencies in your area and get their opinion.
