Barbora Strycova, Galina Voskoboeva sail into the second round – e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic made light work of talented Sofia Arvidsson in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 on Tuesday to reach the second round of the tournament.
The 25-year-old Strycova ousted her opponent by peppering the court with forehands and winners and mixing her game with some cunning drop shots. The Czech looked to attack right from the beginning and made some good moves to make
her 27-year-old opponent run for her money.
Zahlavova Strycova broke the serve in the second game of the first set to gain the meaningful 2-0 lead in the set. The Czech then had another vital opportunity of making a serve break in the seventh game which she converted with
utmost ease to grab the impassable 6-2 lead in the set.
The second set followed the same pattern with Zahlavova Strycova dominating her Swede opponent in every department of the game. At 1-all in the second set, the Czech player hit a series of backhands down the line to twice gain
the advantage over the Swede.
The Czech broke her opponent’s serve thrice in the set not allowing her any chance of finding her footing. She smashed her backhand and forehand winners all over the court and made Strycova’s game totally ineffective. The 25-year-old
Czech converted the decisive match point to seal the contest that lasted for only fifty five minutes.
Strycova executed her shots brilliantly from the baseline and surprised her opponent with a genius shot selection. Her stout and genuine serve ensured her a very distinctive position in the match as she fired a number of winners
down the line. Strycova worked out an impressive 72 percent first serve conversion and also defended important points with her rock solid defence. In addition, she rescued two of three break points against Arvidsson to dent her confidence.
With this victory, the 25-year-old Strycova has improved her year-to-date win loss mark to 16/15 and looks to perform with the same level of confidence in her up-coming matches at the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open. Up next for Strycova
is the German qualifier, Mona Barthel, who will square off against her in the second round of e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open.
In another match during the day, Kazakh tennis player Galina Voskoboeva thrashed out the Aussie Jelena Dokic 6-3, 6-1 to advance into the second round of the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday.
Voskoboeva’s superior serve created all sorts of problems for her opponent from Australia. She broke the serve three times in the match and also saved the crucial break points against Dokic to make her position strong in the contest.
The 26-year-old Russian prevailed after 56 minutes of play.
Shuai Zhang of China awaits her to do battle for the first time in their careers at the second round of the tournament.
