Barbora Zahlavova Strycova cripples Camila Giorgi to reach round two – Family Circle Cup 2012
Czech star, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, devastated the Italian qualifier, Camila Giorgi, with a breadstick at the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Monday. She registered a 6-1, 6-3 score line against the French resident to secure a place in the second round of
this clay court event held at the Family Circle Tennis Center.
The 26-year-old showed superb skills and agility to outclass Giorgi in straight sets in their first meeting. After gaining the limelight at this one hour 18-minute duel, Strycova convincingly booked a place in the proceeding round and edged in the head-to-head
series by 1-0 against the Italian.
Strycova high-spiritedly stepped on the green clay courts and after Giorgi held her serve in the opening game, the Czech wiped out the following six games in a row. She smoothly swiped in her entire serves and capitalised on three out of four break chances
to pull out the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked 58th in the WTA rankings, Strycova lost her path in the follow-up set and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-2. However, she kept her head in the match and not only recovered in the fourth game but got the breakthrough
in the eighth game to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line.
Bidding for her second WTA career title, Strycova registered impressive stats. She manipulated a better first serve share of 73 per cent in contrast with the qualifier’s 63 per cent and acceptably clicked 30 out of 47 points on it.
Next up for Strycova is the Canadian blooming star, Aleksandra Wozniak, who shocked the 11th seed, Christina McHale, in three sets to set-up this meeting. The 24-year-old blocked nine out of 12 breakpoints she encountered and capitalised on four
out of nine break chances to formulate a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 score line.
Elena Vesnina of Russia also earned the spotlight later that day. The 25-year-old Russian broke Stephanie Dubois serve four times and defended five out of eight breakpoints she came across to clobber a 7-6(10), 7-5 score line. She produced a lower first
serve share but impressively clinched 39 out of 57 points on it.
