The Barca number 6 opined that it was due to his side’s age-old traditional rivalry against Real Madrid that has caused La Blaugrana to be underappreciated.
He maintained that Los Blancos have the dominant share when it comes to Spanish supporters and emphasized that the Santiago Bernabeu outfit enjoys a greater fan following domestically.
Real Madrid and Barcelona share one of the oldest rivalries in the game and are undoubtedly the most competitive side in the Spanish Primera Division.
They are also the most successful teams in the country and have never been relegated from the Spanish La Liga.
The Spanish international argued that even though the Catalan outfit has achieved a lot of success lately, its achievements are not acknowledged.
In the last three-and-a-half seasons, Barca have managed to triumph over 13 trophies out of a total of 16 competitions that they competed in.
They have been the champions of Spain since 2008 and are considered a massively dominant force all across the country.
Apart from their domestic accomplishments, the Nou Camp-based outfit has also managed to win the UEFA Champions League twice in the last three seasons.
However, Xavi has insisted that no matter how many trophies Barca win, they may never win majority support in Spain.
While talking to reporters, the Spaniard was quoted as saying:
"Barca's victories are more valued outside of Spain than in Spain, but it's because of the Barca-Madrid war that we have here."
La Blaugrana are currently second in the Spanish Primera Division’s league standings and are 10 points behind leaders, Los Blancos.
Barcelona will continue their La Liga campaign this Saturday as they face Sevilla away from home.
