Barcelona, Montepaschi Siena and Galatasaray win - Euroleague season Week 1, Group D Roundup
FC Barcelona Regal 86 - Union Olimpija 64
Marcelinho Huertas had 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds as FC Barcelona Regal opened the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague with an 86-64 victory over Union Olimpija on October 20 at Stozice Arena.
Pete Mickeal scored 15 points and grabbed two steals in his return since November 2010 while Fran Vazquez ended with 10 points in the victory.
Danny Green led Olimpija with 17 points and four rebounds while Ratko Varda added 16 points in the loss. Regal moved the ball better and dished out 20 assists as compared to just seven by the Olimpija.
Juan Carlos Navarro scored six points in the opening quarter to help the Regal grab a 24-19 lead after 10 minutes. Barcelona held Olimpija to 11 points in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 41-30 at halftime. Both teams
played a close game in the third quarter but Barcelona maintained a ten-point lead at the end at the end of the quarter.
Barcelona lead quickly ballooned to 15 points, 59-46, after Deon Thompson dunked with two minutes to go in the third quarter. Olimpija did not get any closer than 11 points in the fourth quarter and Regal earned their first victory
of the season.
Montepaschi Siena 79 - Unics 71
At Kazan, Montepaschi Siena rallied from a double-digit deficit and cruised past Unics 79-71 for the first victory of this season.
McCalebb led Montepaschi with 17 points and four assists. Rimantas Kaukenas had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals while David Andersen chipped in 13 points and five rebounds for Montepaschi.
Henry Domercant headed Unics with a Euroleague career-high 30 points and seven rebounds while Nathan Jawai added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Unics held a 24-20 lead after one quarter and carried a 44-43 advantage into the second half. Siena turned it on in the third period and outplayed Unics 21-11, converting halftime deficit into a 64-55 lead. Unics fought hard to
throughout the last quarter but Montepaschi maintained their lead until the final buzzer.
Galatasaray Medical Park 76 - Asseco Prokom 72
Galatasaray Medical Park recorded their first-ever Turkish Airlines Euroleague victory with a 76-72 triumph over Asseco Prokom on October 19 in Gydnia, Poland.
Jaka Lakovic punctuated a game-high 21 points on 6 for 7 shooting from three-point range and dished out four assists. Preston Shumpert totalled 12 points while Luksa Andric ended with 11 points and four rebounds for Galatasaray.
Adam Hrycaniuk and Donatas Motiejunas led Prokom with 15 points each while Oliver Lafayette added 12 points.
Galatasaray played well and held a point lead after first quarter but Prokom successfully converted the deficit into a five-point lead at halftime. The third quarter was more of the same as Medical Park limited Unics to 11 points
only and stretched their lead to 59-48.
Unics reeled off a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter and trimmed their deficit to just three, 70-67. They continued to play with focus and tied the game at 71 before Galatasaray posted three straight points for a 74-71 lead. With
the clock running down, Alonzo Gee hit a free throw to make it a two-point contest. Joshua Shipp hit 2 of 2 free throws at the end to seal the victory for his team.
