Barcelona, where to stay?

Can anybody reccomend any reasonably priced hotel in the gothic or ramblas area ( i want to be central), i have never been before and am bringing my mum for her birthday so would like to stay somewhere nice but not over priced.

Last year we stay in the Gravina H - 10. Is a small hotel located in a quite street very close to Plaza Catalunya. Is a 3 star hotel with good rooms and lobby. Many of the hotels in the Historical centers in the European cities are made to be practical and don't expect many amenities. Nevertheless been in the center of the city is "priceless". Check the interconnecting rooms with windows to the rear patio. The rooms are a little bigger than the others. They offer Cava for free in the reception for the guest. The price was near 80 euros for room.

there is a good hotel called 1888 which comes highly recommended. I've mostly stayed in apartments when I've visited Barcelona and there are many to choose from. This company is good http://www.holiday-velvet.com/barcelona but there are many others that can offer you something better value and larger than a hotel room.

I can tell you where not to stay, "Gothic point hostel".  having travelled for 7 months in south America staying all the time in hostels I'd have a fair idea of what standard to expect in hostels and this was one of the worse.

You wait (and I'm not exaggerating), at least an hour to check in you get to your room and spacious would not be what I call it cramped and confined would be more to the point. I stayed in a 4 person and 12 person dorm and the 12 person dorm was filthy. The treat you like cattle herd you in throw you out- don't dare stay in bed a few minutes longer than your suppose to!!!

Pay a bit extra and treat your self to a hotel or if theres a few of you you can stay in your own apartment for next to nothing. The horrible hostel almost  ruined my first visit to one of the most amazing cities I've been to in my life. When I decided to move and splash out on a hotel I was less stressed and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I use a hotel on  ramblers strip. in the middle by the subway entrance. A double room with balcony facing the strip .

Most of Spain accommodation is cheep compared to the UK and lots available too.

I just turn up and book-in , sometimes I have to use another, loads just off the strip. check it out first, before booking in.
