Barcelona are a ‘passing fad’ - Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas
Real Madrid favourite Iker Casillas has recently come out in the press and declared arch rivals Barcelona a passing fad. Casillas has admitted that the current crop of Blaugrana players is the best in the Catalonian club’s history but argued that Real Madrid
are not far off from overtaking them.
Iker said that he thought they were now able to match them. He said that their team could be compared favourably with Barcelona and they were just a few months behind them, or a season at most. He went on saying that the current Barca team was the best in
their history but just like any fashion, their decline was near.
FC Barcelona has arguably been the best club in the world football for the last few seasons. Ever since Josep Guardiola took over the coaching role from Frank Rijkaard, the club has become the team to beat in Europe and also on the domestic front. In the
year 2009, Barcelona won an unprecedented six titles in a single year. The feat included a historic treble of Copa del Rey, La Liga and the highly coveted UEFA Champions league. Any team would find it hard to replicate success of such magnitude and Barcelona
was no different. The club could only manage a league title last year but their domestic form saw them dominate La Liga in a stunning manner.
Iker Casillas believes appointment of Jose Mourinho will make all the difference for Los Galacticos.
“He gives us a very important addition. He is the ideal coach for his character and the way he expresses himself to the players. I think it will succeed at Real Madrid”
Mourinho has won six league titles and two UEFA Champions League medals in a career that just spans over 10 years. The Special One was on song last year with Inter Milan as the Nerazzuri won a historic treble. The amount of silverware that the Portuguese
has won in such a short time period is truly sensational. Indeed many already rank the former Chelsea tactician as the best manager of all the time.
Whether Real Madrid can mount a serious challenge to Barcelona’s throne can be debated. However, one thing is for sure, Casillas latest comments will fuel the rivalry further and the Madrid gloves man will have to make a point when Real Madrid take on Malaga
on Saturday.
