Barcelona eye Marcos Senna
According to the veteran midfielder’s agent, Barcelona are reportedly eyeing up a move for the Spanish holding midfielder, Marcos Senna. Senna will obviously be brought into the team to fill the empty space created in the midfield following the big summer move of Yaya Toure from Barcelona to the Eastlands of Manchester City.
According to the players representive, “[A move to Barcelona] would be the crowning moment of [Senna's] sporting career. I’m certain that if Barca speak to Villarreal, the club’s directors won’t put up any obstacles to stop him from leaving.
In these eight years at the club, Senna has never had a problem with the club. On the contrary, he has always been very professional and they would understand that going to Barça would be a unique opportunity.”
From the representatives comments it would appear as though the agent, was trying to engineer a move for Senna to Barcelona himself, however that is not the case since it appears as though the player is also aware of this. In a recent interview with the Spanish press which took place during Villareal’s pre season tour in the Republic Of Ireland, the player was reported to have said, “For me it’s an honour and a dream that Barca are thinking of me. There’s nothing yet, but just the fact they are thinking of me is an honour.”
Marcos Senna would be a great addition to the already unstoppable Barcelona team. He would sit perfectly behind the likes of Xavi and Iniesta in the midfield providing the extra cover needed in the defense and by playing as a sweeper behind the two attack minded midfielders. Senna however will be provide some extra edge to the squad as well. He is easily one of the best passers of the ball at the current moment in time and has a habit for scoring some spectacular goals. His best goal that most people would remember was the goal he scored against Real Betis from the half way line.
This goal scoring and passing ability is something that Yaya Toure did not posses. Toure on the other hand was a tremendous tackler of the ball and was fantastic at retaining possession and holding the ball so that the players around him could make space. Senna is by no means not capable of doing that, however since he is physically much smaller than Toure, he is unable to do so with a great sense of authority.
Senna is also significantly much older than Toure. He is currently thirty four years old and will not be able to play as many games as Toure could have. He is also obviously not in his physical prime as well. The technique and the footballing brain that he possesses however compensates for that since he is able to outsmart almost any one and predict what they are going to do before they even happen to do that.
It would be interesting to see how Senna would play with Iniesta and Xavi in the midfield. The last time he did so was with the Spanish national team in the Euro 2008, which he won with Spain. He was voted to be amongst the best players of the tournament but missed out on being named the best, since his team mate Xavi took home that award. If they can recreate the same form they showed back then, it would be safe to say that Barcelona could be on the path to winning every title possible once again.
