  1. The Gaudi buildings (La Pedrera and Sagrad Familia are best); the old town for the Cathedral, the quaint shops, Sta Maria del Mar; shopping ( Up Gracia, down Rambla Catalunya. For night life, get a copy of the 'Time out' guide  to Barcelona.

Don't forget to visit the Christmas market around the Cathedral.

  2. Hi I leaved 3 years in Barcelona.. this is a very great place to visit. To visit, the best deal is the touristic bus of Barcelona, as it gives you some reduction for museum and other monument and allows you the first day to see a lot.. this is very well organized and punctual! You can stop to each places, visit it and then take the next bus to see the next monument.. you'll need probably 2 days for it.. depends how much time you take to visit museum! You can find those bus on Plaza Catalunya... then a must are: Sagrada Familia, Montjuic, Tibidabo (gives you an overview of Barcelona), and of course the different Museum of Art and Painting (Miro, Picasso, Gaudi, etc). To eat... don't eat on the Ramblas (between Plaza Catalunya and the sea), the restaurants are very expensive and the quality is not good for what they offer.. go for example for the restaurants by the old harbour of Barcelona (Barcelonetta)... the ones that are in front of the museum directly by the harbour are the best to eat fish and paella and fideu (a must to try if you are the first time in Barcelona.. this is pasta, grilled with sea food and aioli sauce on the side). If you want to experience a typical night in Barcelona, then go in the Barrio Gotico in any restaurants, as each one is unique, good and better quality/price than on the Ramblas. For fun, there are many discos in the Barrio Gottico, and by the Hotel Arts in the new Harbour. The discos and pub under the Hotel Arts, directly on the beach and not in the Harbour arena are much more better in terms of music and atmosphere! For shopping, you can go to Diagonal Mar (Maresme) you can reach easily with tram and/or metro... shops are good and you have the advantage to be near the sea.. and have some good fast-food restaurants. If you stay long enough, go outside from Barcelona on Saturday night and go to Sitges.. it is a g*y paradies.. but if you want parties, you might go to this typical catalan village which is nice to visit during the day, and good for parties. You reach the village by train in 20 minutes (it costs around 10 EUR if I don't mistake). So depending how long you stay, you could as well go in the bar and disco in Diagonal/Muntaner this is an area where the reacher people go out and the atmosphere is different. I wish you all the best... and don't get upset if the Catalan are not so friendly as expected.. you will see that the people who are friendly there are Latinamerican or Spanisch not from Barcelona... Catalan don't like tourists! Be carefull not to get robbed at night.. keep low profile, don't take too much money with you and keep the original of your ID card at the hotel if you can. Don't show your mobile phone and when you eat in a restaurant, keep control over your belonging at all the time. If you go in the Barrio Gotico or Barcelonetta at night (in small streets) don't speak english or a foreign language for any reason if you see a group of people.. you might get robbed. I always advice my friends to take taxi... the city is not so dangerous if you know it.. but in some areas, they are waiting for tourists and it goes very quick, losing everything you have especially between 23h00 to 07h00!

Enjoy your trip, Barcelona is a fabulous city.

  3. If you go to Barcelona do not miss Las Ramblas, it is a long avenue of shops, restaurants and street entertainers.  Don't eat the paella unless you want the squirts on your honeymoon :(

Believe it or not, a Catholic monastery about an hour outside of town is a popular tourist destination.  It is set in the mountains and the scenery is breathtaking.

The Cathedral of La Sagrada Familia is a huge church and possibly the most well-known landmark in Barcelona.

There is also a Picasso museum, I am a big Picasso fan but have not been there.

  4. Hola HG,

If you want to stay HOT, guy -- it's not (as yahoo might say) "other Spain", it's "Catalunya" !!!!  The wonderful folks in Barcelona, and the rest of Calalunya, will gently try to explain that they aren't Spanish, Spaniards,  or an 'other Spain'.  They are Catalans.  If you don't get it (and you don't try to speak Spanish to them), they'll be nice to a dull outsider.  But if you get it, then speak any other language (not Spanish), and you'll be accepted.  Young Catalans seem to be fluent in all languages, possibly including Spanish (but don't demand Spanish).

    l' adeu

  5. Las Ramblas is a very good place to start. There's always something to do around there. The clubs are good, but you should also try and catch a flamenco show (just to get a taste of the culture!).
