Barcelona tied up against Real Betis in the Spanish Super Cup
The Spanish Champions are going to be facing Real Betis in the quarterfinal stages of the Spanish Super Cup. This fixture is going to remind the Barcelona squad and its management of a historical final between these two teams back
in 1997. The current coach of the La Blaugrana, Josep Guardiola featured in that game, as the La Blaugrana fans were present in the home stadium of their arch nemesis Real Madrid, the Santiago Bernabeu. However, both the teams have not met up in a game since
then.
Santiago Bernabeu has its own meaning to it whenever the La Blaugrana fans have to talk about it. It is the home stadium of Real Madrid and the Catalan fans want their team to win there no matter who they are facing. On 28th June
1997, Barcelona were to face Betis in the Spanish Super Cup tie at Santiago Bernabeu. It was the night when the Spanish Champions had the chance to win the Cup for the 23rd time and they did. It is also historical because after winning against Betis
in the final match, Barcelona were able to celebrate for their third title that year.
The match was won 3-0 with the Portuguese legend Luis Figo scoring a brace for the Catalan club and later http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Juan-Antonio-c19650 Pizzi scoring another to take the title home. Bobby Robson was sitting on the bench while Josep Guardiola wore
his number 4 jersey and made sure that he attends well to the affairs in the Barcelona midfield. After winning the game, Barcelona fans created a historical site as they played their own anthem on the Real Madrid territory.
Before facing off for the final match in Santiago Bernabeu, both the teams had faced seven times during the Cup. The record looks to be very close between the two teams as Barcelona have won five while Betis have won three times
– including the final at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Back in 1994, it was a big shock for all the football fans as Betis were able to qualify for the next round after beating Johan Cryuff’s “Dream Team” in the quarterfinals. However, in 1958, the Catalans were under their boss Helenio
Herrera and when Betis were to be the next target of Barcelona, they produced extraordinary results and won the game 6-0.
Betis were a part of the Spanish La Liga back in 2008-2009 when Barcelona won six trophies in the same season. The Catalans faced a tough test against them as Betis troubled them throughout the home leg. However, Josep Guardiola
showed great composure and won the game 3-2, even though it was a tight affair. Later on, Barcelona had to travel to Andalusia – the home of Betis. The Catalan Giants were hoping to get the result out of the bottom table team but they only managed to draw
the game. At the end of the season, the La Blaugrana lifted the trophy as the Spanish La Liga Champions while Betis were relegated from the first tier.
Both the teams have faced each other 92 times in the Spanish La Liga. The Catalans share a larger ratio of wins with the Andalusia side as the La Blaugrana have won 53 games, drawn 19 and lost only 20.
