Mathieu Valbuena’s agent has revealed that the Spanish giants were interested in attaining his client’s services couple of seasons ago but the deal collapsed in the end
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 midfielder moved to the Ligue 1 outfit in 2006 and has made 176 appearances for the Rhone giants, scoring more than 20 goals and providing a number of assists for his teammates in the process.
The 28-year-old joined the nine-time champions of France from Libourne, a third-division team, and has been an integral part of the Rhone giants ever since. His impressive form over the years attracted a number of suitors, but the Frenchman opted to stay
at Stade Velodrome.
And his agent, Christophe Hutteau has revealed that La Liga outfit, Barcelona, were also among the interested parties. While talking to reporters, Hutteau revealed that Blaugrana wanted to sign Valbuena few years ago and they were very serious in that regard.
The agent said that Txiki Begiristain, who was Barcelona’s sporting director few years ago, contacted him regarding the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international and they talked about the player’s availability.
''Two or three years ago, when Txiki Begiristain [now at Manchester City] was still sporting director in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604, he called me, and we talked about Mathieu," he said.
Hutteau added that Valbuena is one of the best players in the country and he wasn’t surprised when he learned about Barca’s interest in his client. The agent said that Begiristain is a huge admirer of the midfielder and he wanted to bring the player to Camp
Nou.
"He knows him very well, and had always liked him. He asked questions about his consistency and his statistics.”
However, the deal never happened and Mathieu Valbuena remained with Marseille in the end. But Christophe Hutteau feels that in football anything is possible and the 28-year-old can still move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe as he has the potential
to become the best in the business.
"I'm sure he can play in a team in the European top 10. He is only 28, and everything is still possible."
