After a disappointing start to 2012/13 La Liga season under Tito Vilanova, the former Arsenal captain is relishing his central role for La Blaugrana.
Riazor faithful bore witness to an entertaining La Liga encounter between http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and Deportivo La Coruna. Lionel Messi’s ability to find the back of the net was the highlight of the fixture, with SuperDepor showing their uncanny resolve.
However, it was La Blaugrana’s defensive frailties that took centre stage after the encounter. The Catalan club have now conceded 11 goals in their 8 La Liga outings, seven more than their tally last season. Interestingly, the Camp Nou based entity has shipped
in eight goals in their last four domestic fixtures.
Nevertheless, there are positives for Tito Vilanova, chief of which is Cesc Fabregas’ increasingly assured performances for the Copa del Rey champions. The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 player was Barcelona’s most outstanding player in La Coruna, with three assists against
his name.
La Masia academy graduate showcased mobility, and freshness in his display. He did not shy away from voicing his feelings, admitting that he is satisfied: "I felt very comfortable, I was comfortable."
It has been the position that the midfielder has been deployed in that has led to improvement in the performances by the player. Vilanova understands from earlier in the season what he wants from the English Premier League veteran, and alongside Victor Valdes
has started all league games.
Pep Guardiola’s long time understudy understands where Cesc can be at his devastating best, and is set to make the best of his abilities, squeezing his qualities from the more central positioning.
In La Coruna Xavi made way for Cesc, and the gamble paid off. The Spanish international relished in the space he had and the increased involvement in build-up of Barcelona’s attacks.
"From the position in which I felt was good, had more space, more touched the ball, I was getting more balls," Fabregas acknowledged.
The dilemma for Vilanova stands at how to distribute minutes and responsibilities amongst the quality midfielders he has at his disposal at the Camp Nou. While problems continue to accumulate in defence, Barcelona will look to build on their offensive displays
to undermine their affects.
