Barcelona’s Team of the Decade – Part 1
In spite of FC Barcelona’s unsteady start at the start of the millennium. Barcelona has had a very successful decade. The club has won four Spanish league titles in 2009; they became the first club in football history to achieve the sextuple and they have
won two Champions leagues.
They have had many great players who have worn the Barca shirts, and it is a really intricate task to decide on the line up for the best players of the decade, though one thing is obvious that most players would be of the ‘dream team’ that won the sextuple
in 2009.
So here is the list for Barcelona’s best of the last decade with a 4-3-3 formation.
Victor Valdés: Goalkeeper
Victor Valdes has been a vital player in every title that the team has won in the last decade. He is without a doubt a great goal keeper, and in spite of the fact that he is underrated by a lot of people, he is still a definite hero for the team.
He is one of the best goal keepers in the world and is considered to be a Barca’s ‘unsung hero’ among football pundits.
Giovanni Van Bronckhorst: Left-Back
Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is one of the best left backs that Barcelona has seen in the last ten years, as the left back spot was always considered to be a weak spot for the Catalonian giants, and this player seemed to have that problem beat.
Gio was always considered to be an extra-ordinary player and was one of the most consistent players on the team. He is the only player that was a part of each and every single Champions League match in 2005-06 and played a crucial part in the team’s victory
in its European Endeavours.
Carles Puyol: Centre-Back
Carles Puyol has made himself into a Barcelona legend; he show cased his talents in the World Cup and now has called it quits from his international career. He is the captain of Barcelona and stands as a landmark to what the club stands for.
The commitments that Puyol put in are an example for youths everywhere that are trying their best to come up in the ranks.
As Puyol may not be the most talented or the skilled defender out there but what he lacks in those fields, he certainly makes up with his ruggedness and his intensity.
Carles Puyol is without a doubt considered to be the heart of Barcelona Football Club and there was no way that he could not be included in this list.
Gerard Piqué: Centre-Back
Gerard Pique is another great player to have come out of La Masia, and he made a brilliant duo with Carles Puyol both in the Spanish national team and in Barcelona.
He is considered to be one of the best centre backs in the world and some say that he is the best defender as well. Some even go as far to say that Pique is the best after Beckenbauer, the German legend, as there are so many similarities between the two
that fans came up with a new nickname for him and called him "Piquenbauer."
Gerard is a definite Barcelona legend and it is believed that when Puyol retires, the armband will be passed onto Pique.
Daniel Alves: Right-Back
Daniel Alves is believed to be one of Barcelona’s best signings in the last few years and most believe that he is one of the best full backs to have ever played football.
Alves is a frightening attacker; he makes treacherous free kicks, and supplies the team with some defence as well so this is why he is called a fully packaged player.
Daniel Alves was signed to Barcelona FC in 2008, and this came out to be a very crucial move as he played a vital role in Barcelona’s sextuple.
