Barclays ATP World Tour Finals; Doubles highlights from Tuesday
The Polish pair of Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg upset the top seed duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan to win their second Group A match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in three sets on Tuesday. The score line was
6-2, 6-7(4), 10-8.
The American twins could have straight away made it into the semi final round if they had triumphed after Philipp Petzschner and Jurgen Melzer had denied Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy their first victory earlier in the day.
Marcin and Mariusz came alive in the nick of time towards the end of the middle set, battling back for a popular victory that also ended a three clash losing streak versus the Bryans. The battle concluded in a time period of one
hour and thirty eight minutes.
Mariusz who had his serve broken on two occasions during the third and seventh game of the opening set, rallied back from 0/40 to deuce at 5-5 in the following set however was broken on the third occasion.
Serving for the clash at 6-5, the 32-year-old Mike Bryan opened up a lead of 40-15 however the number one duo from the United States of America was pinned back losing their third match point chance on a final deuce point. In a
seventeen minute clash Tie-break, quick hands at the net ensured Mariusz and Marcin secured a lead of 3-0 that they extended to 8-3 as the American tandem started to lose control of the net and were rushed into their shots.
A total of three match point chances went begging for the Poles from 9-5 as Matkowski blasted a backhand volley and a backhand crosscourt wide. However at 9-8, the Americans were surpassed at the net, after they had returned a
total of eight volleys.
The Polish pair of Matkowski and Fyrstenberg, who opened their account in London back on Sunday with a straight set win over Dlouhy and Paes, by virtue of this victory, improved their win loss mark to 34-27 on the year. They previously
defeated the Bryans at Barcelona back in April. They are playing in the season finale on the fourth occasion in last five years.
Meanwhile, the grass court Grand Slam winners Philipp Petzschner and Jurgen Melzer denied Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy their first ever victory as a pair at the prestigious event in London as they bounced back from a 4-8 deficit
in the Match Tie-break to seal a three setter win on Tuesday. The final match score was 7-6(9), 4-6, 10-8.
Seeded number seven to win the title in London, Melzer and Petzschner as a result of this victory now stands at 1-1 record in Group A. They previously fell in their opening match at the hands of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.
Dlouhy and Paes, who were toppled by Matkowski and Fyrstenberg in their first match, on the other hand, dropped down to a 0-2 mark.
The fourth seed tandem of Dlouhy and Paes are playing in the season finale on the third occasion in their career and remain winless with a 0-8 record.
Paes and Dlouhy despite starting strongly could not continue their dominance after taking a lead of 8-4 and looked out of touch for the rest of the match. In a dramatic turn of events, the enthusiastic pair of Jurgen and Petzschner
took six points in a row to record win in the end. The match was stretched to a time period of one hour and forty five minutes.
Prior to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Jurgen and Petzschner had not played together since the United States Open after Petzschner injured his ankle back in September.
