Barclays ATP World Tour Finals; Fyrstenberg / Matkowski versus Petzschner / Melzer – Doubles Match Preview
The sixth seed tandem of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski will meet the eighth seed pair of Philipp Petzschner and Jurgen Melzer in the second doubles match of the day at the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Wednesday. It will be their
first head to head meeting on the tour. The Polish duo of Fyrstenberg and Matkowski are currently leading Group A with a mark of 2-0, with Melzer/Petzschner and the Bryans resting at 1-1. Dlouhy-Paes, on the other hand, are 0-2 so far as they have lost both
their round robin clashes at the prestigious event in London.
The Polished pair of Fyrstenberg and Matkowski made it into the seasons ending World Tour Finals for the fourth time in the last five years. The only time they couldn’t reach the prestigious event in London was back in 2007.
Seeded number six to win the title at the elite eight man field in London, Mariusz Fyrstenberg along with Marcin Matkowski did not start the season on a high note. The tandem came to the limelight after picking up their only ATP World Tour crown of
the year in Eastbourne after getting the better of Fleming-Skupski in the finals in straight sets prior to the grass court Grand Slam tournament at the All England Club.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski, however couldn’t continue their winning momentum and thus struggled in the next six contests on the tour with a mark of 2-6 before turning things around at the year’s final Grand Slam, in the United States Open in New York.
The duo did well to make their way into the quarter final round at the Flushing Meadows in The Big Apple before falling at the hands of the Bryan brothers in two sets.
Last month, Matkowski along with Fyrstenberg successfully made their way into a total of four title battles in a row, including three on Asian swing. They were runners up at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, China Open in Beijing and ATP World Tour
Masters 1000 Shanghai in China.
The team is recently coming off their solid performance in Vienna where they finished as runners up to Nestor-Zimonjic. Their finals streak was snapped with an opening round defeat at the Valencia Open back in October.
The Austrian-German pair of Melzer and Petzschner, on the other hand, is playing at the World Tour Finals in London on the very first occasion in their career.
In their first year together as a team, Melzer along with his partner Petzschner did well to make it into the season finale after picking up the biggest crown of their career at the grass court Grand Slam tournament back in July. Despite finishing
at number twelve in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings, the Austrian-German side qualified for the London event as a major winner ranked between number eight and twenty.
Seeded number eight to win the title in the Grand finale in London, Melzer and Petzschner posted their best result of the season by grabbing a crown in Zagreb after getting the better of Clement-Olivier Rochus in the finals in straight sets.
They however couldn’t continue their form and were bundled out in the opening round in the next two events before their title victory at the All England Club. The tandem managed to survive in a five setter semi final clash and then overpowered Lindstedt-Tecau
in two sets to win the trophy.
The both of them played together only on five occasions as Petzschner injured his right ankle during a league match in Germany back in September and did not come back until London.
