Barclays Premier League Countdown to the Transfer Window (Part 3)
Tottenham Hotspur
IN: William Gallas, Sandro Ranieri
OUT: Lee Butcher, Sam Cox, John Bostock, Dorian Dervite, David Button, Oscar Jansson, Jonathan Obika, Jimmy Walker, Ryan Mason, Adel Taarabt
Tottenham Hotspurs have kept their departures and arrivals to a bare minimum in this season. It comes as a big surprise because normally, the Spurs go through a hectic transfer season. Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham Hotspurs boss, loves to recruit new players. But why a sudden change in policy for Redknapp?
Tottenham kept a low profile in this year’s transfer market because the Lilly Whites are in the Championship League this season. They have to battle at even more fronts and the take the game to a whole new level if they wish to succeed.
There are only two players that did sign for Tottenham. Both Gallas and Ranieri are dazzling signings but one thing is clear, that these new recruits have to work extra hard to settle in with the team. Both players need a lot of practice if they want to influence the club’s game play.
Sandro, the under 20 Brazilian captain has come to join the team after winning the South American Champions League. Fellow recruit William Gallas has tremendous experience in football, as he has played in major clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea and has also worked wonders in the French national team.
Moreover, Luis Fabiano has been linked to sign with Tottenham for this season. The Seville player would be done with his contract next summer and right now, Tottenham Hotspurs wanted to bag the star player right now. The signing of this player would mean that they will be able to keep him at a constant pay wage at the expense of a transfer fee.
Signing the player when he is a free transfer would result in two major problems: firstly, there would be other offers for him, some that will outbid Tottenham Hotspurs. Secondly, he can demand a pay rate that ‘The Spurs’ just would not be able to afford. So it would be in the clubs best interest to bring on the players right now.
Seville’s manager has asked for a 20 million pound transfer fee. This price is completely absurd given that there is only a year left on the players contract, and as Daniel Levy, the Tottenham Chairman has said that there is no way he is going to accept the 20 million price for the player.
This left Fabiano with only one choice, and this was another two year contract with Sevilla and he accepted and signed that.
Tottenham Hotspurs are focusing on Klaas Jan Huntelaar but this is being opposed by FC Schalke 04. Right now, the player can be signed for 11.5 million pounds and AC Milan will be willing to let go of the player. This is because they have signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Barcelona and want to get rid of Huntelaar as soon as they can.
Harry Redknapp also attempted to sign Ashley Young from Villa, by offering a trade off deal by giving away Keane, Jermaine Jenas and David Bentley in place of Ashley Cole.
Redknapp also contacted West Ham for the availability of Scott Parker on a transfer deal of something around 8 million pounds but this did not go through.
Stipe Pletikosa was scheduled to sign with the team and has gone through his medical. He will sign the papers as soon and he becomes Tottenham Hotspurs third choice goal keeper in the Champions league.
