Barclays Premier League: Worst Signings

The recession had hit the Premier League last season, with most teams other than Manchester City finding it impossibly to sign player. However there were still enough big money transfers that ended up being big money flops. Here are the top big money transfers that ended up being flops last season.
Garbriel Obertan was named the new French Sensation. United fans have barely managed to see him play all season long. Obertan managed to appear in only six league matches. He cost united around three million pounds, but the fans are still left wondering as to what’s so sensational about the player.
Stewart Downing was labeled as England’s best left footed midfielder. Downing is now twenty five years old now, no longer the young player who everyone thought would make a great impact on the England national squad. His twelve million pound move from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa, was a failure, he barely managed to appear in any matches and has been dropped to the bench behind much more competent players.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Liverpool as the first ever Greek national to play in the team. He signed for a fee around the two million pound mark. The defender has been nothing short of a calamity, he miss times most tackles and for someone who is as tall as he is, he is terrible in the air. He occasionally throws in a career ending tackle but thankfully for the opposition manages to miss time it.
Patrick Vieira signed for Manchester City to everyone’s surprise including the City fans. The old veteran midfielder was the first signing the new City boss, Mancini made. Ever since arriving Vieira hasn’t even looked half as good as he used to be. He’s been slow, poor and almost as good as an amateur. He even managed to get red carded in the first few games he played for the club.
Mido signed for West Ham on a contract that saw him making only one thousand pounds a week. That made him the lowest paid player in the Barclays Premier League by quite a margin. But people soon realized why he was willing to play for so little, it’s because he is absolutely horrible. He came back to England to prove how good he was, but has so far only managed to prove that it was a good thing that he left it in the first place.
Roque Santa Cruz, was one of the best strikers in the world when he played for Blackburn. So it was no surprise that City paid seventeen and a half million pounds for the player. He managed to score four goals in nineteen games for the team and has been a mere shadow of the player he used to be.
Alberto Aquilani joined Liverpool in hopes that he would be able to fill the void left by the departing Xabi Alonso. The Merseyside management spent a good thirty million pounds on the player. He managed to get injured on his way to England and hence played in only twenty one games. He managed to start only eight of those games and came on as a sub for a few minutes in most of them.
