Question:

Bareback Pads?

i do alot of bareback, my horse is very comfy and i dont bounce all over his back, but when i get off his fur is going in every direction where my thighs/bum were from my jeans rubbing. it only happens when ive been doing alot of cantering.

im debating a bareback pad... only i dont know if the thickness will affect me being able to feel my horse under me. i know they slide around even with the girth...and i def wouldnt get one with stirrups (talk about defeating the purpose of bareback lol plus the danger of it rolling) anybody use one that likes them? pros/cons? heres one im looking at(despite the tacky patterns lol)

  1. I live in So. Cali and I have a bareback pad you could try, which isn't like the link though (mine is like the Diamond Wool Deluxe Green Bareback pad).

Just in mind incase you live near me. I wouldn't mind you trying mine.

You can still feel the horse movements; but, I can not say that for every bareback pad as I haven't tried every single one on the market.

Bareback pads are like saddles, they fit each horse's body differently. Mine will fit my 15.3 handed 8 year old gelding well (about 1300 pounds) but with my other 30 year old 15.3 gelding, it won't due to this age/high withers.   My 14.2 handed 17 yr old mare, it likes to slide back as we are walking up a hill. Makes gripping with thighs a little harder sometimes.

That is something I noticed with one similiar like the one you are looking at; however, every horse can have a different way it will allow to ride.

I personaly, I rather ride bareback with out the pad. My horses also seem less annoyed. But that is just based on my experience.

  2. They aren't that expensive, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I prefer bareback over using a pad, but there are times when a pad can come in handy.

  3. the one ur looking at, is an excellent one. it wont slide around b/c of the breast color. i rode one horses with a bonier back, and used that one and it works great. the thickness isnt bad.. its not too thick so u can feel your horse, but your horses fur is gonna go in every direction.. thats why u brush were the saddle, or in this case, ur legs were after you ride.

but if you want one, the one ur looking at is great

  4. I have a bareback pad and it works great for me.  I also ride in a full saddle and totally bareback, but for bareback I prefer the pad.  They don't slip too much.

  5. my opinion i hate bareback pads! But that's me, everyone has a different opinion! lol

The only time I found it useful was when my horse was wet!

But i was glad i tried it out once so i had an idea of what i was dealing with!!

I probably didn't help much! But good luck!!

  6. I would use a pad...I bought this really great one its suede, helps with the gripping.  It was a little pricey.

  7. I have a fur bareback pad that slides a lot on my horse who is also very comfy. :) However, my brother has a tacky-too(hope i spelled that right) bareback pad that doest slip at all. I think its out of the Smith Brothers catalogue but i've seen them in other places too. it is kind of thick though which is usually why I dont use a pad. Also on state line tack is this tacky too pad   http://www.statelinetack.com/itemdy00.as...

anyways, if you look on state line and key in bareback pads it will come up with this one. the one you are looking at would be a nice pad with the breast collar. but if you horse sweats it still might be slippin a lot if its like mine, but thats what the breast collar is for right? anyways, i hope this helped!

  8. Bareback pads are great but I would not recommend the one pictured, it is really poor quality.  If you do ride bareback "a lot", invest in a good pad and you will never have to buy another one.  Look at the pad sold on www.parelli.com.  The underside is medical felt and the top is very nice suede leather with good quality leather rigging.  I have had one for years and it still looks like new.  And this pad does not slip on your horse.  Also, with the leather seat, it is like wearing full seat riding breeches all the time.  It is really a good pad.

  9. if your wanting it just because of the fur but your still want it to feel like bareback i dont suggest it... its alot different it feels more like a saddle.... i used one but decided bhacrebacks alot more natural for when you dont want a saddle
