Barger, Hall, Cardoso and Davidson impress in Round of 96: Saquarema Surf Pro International
Four surfers hailing from Hawaii, Ireland, Brazil and Australia have confirmed their places for the Men’s round of 48 after the completion of heat 17, 18, 19 and 20 of the Men’s round of 96 at Saquarema in Brazil, on Thursday May 26.
The surfer to draw first blood was Kai Barger of Hawaii, who clinched heat 17 against his countryman Kiron Jabour. Both surfers were caught in a neck-to-neck battle though and Barger barely managed to edge past Jabour by a margin of 12.80 to 12.33 points.
With this win, Barger confirmed his place for the Men’s round of 48.
Meanwhile, Robson Santos and Heath Joske couldn't really make the cut for the next round and ended with scores of 11.47 and 10.93 respectively.
In heat 18, the Ireland surfer Glenn Hall notched the first place with a score of 12.83 (out of 20), while Tanner Gudauskas of USA came second with 10.27 and Jeronimo Vargas of Brazil earned third place honours with 9.27 points. Messias Felix of Brazil disappointed,
not only the home crowd but himself, as he earned a miserable score of 3.63 in that heat.
After winning heat 18, Hall has earned a place in the Men’s round of 48. Although it wasn’t the Irishman’s best performance in the event and his score didn’t really show his true potential, he was happy with the result which saw him move to the round of
48. Hall will need to up his game in the next round though if he wants to remain in the competition.
Heat 19 was conquered by the famous Brazilian surfer Willian Cardoso with a winning score of 15.77 (out of 20) as he moved into the next round successfully. Hawaiian, Sebastien Zietz captured second spot with a total score of 14.10, while Richard Christie
of New Zealand wound up second with a score of 11.50. Marlon Lipke (DEU) finished fourth with an average score of 8.40.
Last, but not the least, Chris Davidson of Australia topped heat 20 of the Men’s round of 96 with a sterling score of 14.67, while Jesse Mendes of Brazil captured the second spot with a total score of 12.50 and his countryman Marco Polo ended in third place
with 11.16 points. The Aussie surfer, Blake Thornton failed to make an impression in heat 20 and settled fourth with a score of 10.80.
