  1. In the bariatric program I go to (Stanford University in California) surgeons have the radiology department insert a temporary Greenfield filter  in a situation like this. It's placed in the large vein leading to your heart and traps clots so the body has time to dissolve them. It's usually left in 2-4 weeks. It's inserted and removed without surgery; an IV-type approach is used. You might ask your surgeon to consider this to handle his concern about your history. Nancy Holloway RN
