Question:

Baritone saxophone embouchure?

After playing the alto sax for awhile, I've started playing the bari sax. Whenever I play the bari though, most of the notes don't come out right. Some of the notes do, while others don't. I'm not sure if there's a problem with the horn itself, or if the problem is my embouchure. What is the correct embouchure for playing the bari sax? Do I need to put more mouthpiece into my mouth? If there's a diagram of the embouchure, can you show me it? Thanks!

  1. There is no right or wrong answer - embouchure is a personal thing. I always found that to play bari my embouchure was much more relaxed than on alto.  You might want to get your horn checked out - if there are leaky pads then it won't be helping you at all.  Also remember you have to move a lot more air through the instrument - proper diaphragm support is all important.

  2. Make sure you're not biting up with your bottom jaw/teeth. I know you can get away with that on the alto with only slight intonation problems, but  on the tenor and bari the lower notes will be harder to play and you'll be playing sharp on some notes.  I dunno if you are but if you are biting up with your jaw/teeth thats most likely your problem.  squeeze tight with your lips inward and try not to bite with your bottom teeth

  3. mostly embouchure- i switched three yeas ago. remember to keep your lip over your teeth and take more on top than on bottom. playing bari, if your jaw is to tight lower notes will not come out. it is generally more relaxed.
