Question:

Bark of a sycamore tree- how to preserve it?

I found some bark, and my friend and I believe it is from a sycamore tree; it's sort of cardboard-y or sandpaper-like. Anyways, I want to write stuff on them and keep them. What is the best way to go about preserving them? Should I seal them with something or is drying them out sufficient? How should I go about doing this?

  1. You'll want to keep it from drying out completely or it will eventually crumble. I'd suggest doing your writing or painting while they are still a little pliable, then allow to dry for a week or so, then seal with a good spray varnish or poly finish like minwax spray polyurathane. Use at least two coats. The first will penetrate & the next will seal it. You can use gloss, semi-gloss or matte finish all the same way. I would not suggest using the acrylic (water-based) version. It could warp the thin bark. You'll still need to be careful with your finished project, the bark is still rather delicate but it will last much longer.
