Barking dogs in South Africa!

What is one's right in South Africa regarding barking dogs in the neighborhood?

We have got this Doberman on the property next to us who he seems very lonely which he compensates with barking. I'm not talking about the occasional bark, I'm talking about endless anxiety barking, especially in the evening hours or when the owner is not at home, which is quite often. We are new to this neighborhood and I don't really want to start an issue already with my neighbor and I will obviously talk to him first before going to the next step. But if it comes to worst, what are my rights?

  1. If your neighbors have a problem they'll let you know, either by telling you or shutting up your dog.

  2. I am not sure about your rights, but i hate it if dogs just bark and bark, why do people have dogs, if they don't bother to check why they are barking

  3. What a great advertisement for burglars.  When dog barks, come right inside!

  4. If they are neglecting him you need to call the animal police it's called ASPCA here in america.  They rescue animals that are being mistreated.

  5. Part of your responsibility as a pet owner in built up areas is to ensure that your pet does not create a disturbance. You can report him to your municipality. It is their job to force him to control his pet. They will fine his ***, reposes his wife and kids and take back all he has learnt at school!

Just kidding. best is not to cause trouble. First talk to him, then write a couple of letters before reporting him to the municipality. The key here is to make sure you keep record of your efforts to bring an end to the dogs disturbance. If you get dragged to court and have no proof that you HAVE tried, then you are in trouble. Make sure you drag a buddy along when you TALK to thy neighbour. He will be able to back you up as a witness in court if it must!

  6. If you contact the SPCA they will assist by sending out an inspector - they are very good

  7. As a white South African? Little if any. A barking Doberman is probably exactly what the owner wants, especially when he's not at home.
