The Swiss international player ended his seven year spell at Bayer Leverkusen to join Bundesliga counterparts Schalke this summer, to taste European football and mount a challenge for the league title.

"It's the start of a new era and a new challenge, and that's good for me. Slowly but surely I'm starting to settle at Schalke. The club has real tradition and I've been accepted into the group by everyone," Barnetta was quoted

"It's the first time I'll be able to play in the Champions League. I was injured when Leverkusen played in it and that hurt a lot, so now I'm all the more excited about competing there with Schalke," he mused.
"We can't make the mistake of assuming other teams are better than us," he added.
Barnetta played 187 for his former team in his time at Leverkusen and will try to do well for the Champions League semi-finalists in the new campaign.
