Barnsley smash Leeds United as QPR retain top-spot
All eyes may have been on the return of the Champions League last night, but there were some cracking matches that took place in the Championship.
Barnsley came from a goal down against Leeds United to record a 5-2 win at Oakwell. Former Liverpool youngster Adam Hamill played a part in all five of the goals, as Garry O’Connor, Jim O’Brien, Diego Arismendi along with Hamill and an own goal from Neill Collins grabbed the goals.
Queens Park Rangers kept up their unbeaten start to the season by beating Ipswich 3-0 away from home. Jamie Mackie scored twice and Heidar Helguson scored a penalty to put them three points clear of Cardiff City, who lost 2-1 at Leicester City. Andy King’s two goals in the second half cancelled out Lee Naylor’s fortunate opening goal to deny Cardiff the chance to share top-spot.
Scunthorpe recorded a 4-0 win at Sheffield United to ease the worries of the departure of manager Nigel Adkins. Chris Dagnell scored a brace, while David Mirfin and Martyn Woolford piled on the misery for United.
James Vaughan scored a hat-trick for Crystal Palace as they beat Portsmouth 4-1 at Selhurst Park. The man on loan from Everton made the headlines and ended a run of four defeats to climb up the table. For Portsmouth, Dave Kitson scored a consolation, but they are bottom of the table and without a win so far this season.
The pressure was slightly eased off Nigel Pearson, as his Hull side won 2-0 at the KC Stadium against Derby County. Daniel Ayala and Robert Koren scored the goal to give Derby manager Nigel Clough a lot of problems.
Middlesbrough had to wait until the fourth minute of stoppage time to get all three points against Burnley in a 2-1 win, while James Coppinger scored three times in a 3-1 win for Doncaster over Norwich.
Malky Mackay’s Watford won 2-0 at Bristol City to put them 12th in the table, while Millwall and Reading played out a goalless draw. Lewis McGugan was on the score sheet twice as Nottingham Forest beat Preston 2-1, and Swansea beat Coventry 2-1.
