Baron Davis: The Cleveland Cavaliers point guard goes back to school – NBA Update
During the lockout, when most of National Basketball Association Players are searching for opportunities overseas in order to earn some good cash, the newly acquired point guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Baron Davis is looking
to return to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with the intention of completing his degree.
The NBA lockout is however, not the only thing that pushed Davis back to his studies. The recent death of his grandmother also had to do a lot with it.
Davis described his situation, saying, “With all I’ve been through this year, losing my grandmother, I felt like I need to start taking paths to better myself at this point in my life. Get back in a college atmosphere. Even if
there is a lockout, I look at what opportunity do I have to get something accomplished that I want to accomplish in my life, you know?”
The 32 year old veteran was traded to the Cavaliers in this February from the Los Angeles Clippers, together with the first round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft in return of Mo Williams and Jamario Moon. Joining the Cavs meant a re-union
with his former coach Byron Scott, with whom Davis had somewhat of a patch history. However Davis put all that aside and settled rather well.
On his debut with the Cavs, Baron tallied 18 points, clutched four rebounds and dished five assists. The scoring involved four long range missiles from beyond the arc. His performance lifted the Cavs to a win over the mighty New
York Knicks. As the season went on, Davis kept on making his niche and will play an important role in grooming the number one draft pick this season, point guard Kyrie Irving.
NBA lockout has given Baron a chance again to earn his degree, which he left for his professional career. This is not the first time when Davis is going for his degree. Earlier, he had made an attempt to do so, but things did not
work out.
Besides playing basketball, Davis is also playing an important role in the society. The 6 ft 3in star is also providing assistance to young people in accomplishing their education. For this very purpose, Davis organized beneficial
event second annual Kickball Game for the Rising Stars of his America foundation.
Davis said, “Ultimately I think the long-term goal is to be able to provide kids with after-school programming and education and being able to reinforce education into our kids and our youth. [We're trying to] build model citizens,
community leaders and people who are well-rounded individuals.”
