Baron Davis doesn’t want to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers – NBA Update
Cleveland Cavaliers star Baron Davis has said that he wants to stay with the franchise long term and doesn’t envisage leaving at this point in time.
With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement set to be in place soon, it has been suggested that Davis could be waived off by the Cavs.
The CBA includes an amnesty clause for NBA franchises to waive off a player in order to free up some salary cap space. This means that the Cleveland Cavaliers can decide to let go of Baron Davis and use the salary space he takes
up for signing other players.
Davis is currently owed around $27 million for the next two years, which the Cavaliers would have to pay up even if they waive him off, but they could also spend the on new players without crossing the luxury threshold because
Davis’ contract wouldn’t count against the salary cap.
The player himself doesn’t want that to happen. Although it could in theory allow Davis to join a much stronger side, such as the Los Angeles Lakers who are looking for a point guard, he is happy where he is.
"When the season starts, when training camp starts I'll be a Cleveland Cavalier until they tell me otherwise," Davis said in an interview with ESPN. "I know my name has come up with the amnesty thing, and a lot of people have said
I'm going this place or I'm going that place. My whole thing is to be ready for the season to help any team that I'm on. I welcome any challenge."
Davis has previously expressed a desire to help and nurture Kyrie Irving, the number 1 draft pick by Cleveland. Baron didn’t have anyone around to mentor him when he arrived in the NBA, so it is a cause close to his heart.
The veteran guard though is realistic and accepts that, given the large contract he has, there is a possibility that Cleveland could want to get rid of it. Therefore, he is prepared for whatever may happen when the training camps
start on December 9.
"Having that opportunity to go to Cleveland and kind of like restart my career is something that I really cherish," he said. "But I know that it's a business, and I know with my contract that it was going to be tough for the team
to absorb my contract”
Apart from the Lakers, the New York Knicks have also been mentioned as a possible destination for Davis if he is waived. A lower profile side linked with a move for Davis is the Charlotte Bobcats while the star studded Miami Heat
also believe a more experienced point guard could help them in their quest for an NBA World Championship.
