Baron Davis looking to mentor No.1 draft pick Kyrie Irving at the Cleveland Cavaliers: NBA News
After Kyrie Irving was roped in by the Cleveland Cavalier with the number one draft pick this fall, there were concerns that his arrival would slash the minutes of the 12 year veteran point guard Baron Davis, who adorned the wine and gold in the middle of last season.
A sense of competition, and to some extent jealousy definitely comes in, when an established starting point guard has to all of a sudden cater for another emerging star. However, Davis has taken an opposite route and recently revealed that he will like to maintain a mentor-student relationship with Irving.
"(I'm) really looking forward to playing with, and mentoring, Kyrie. He's so talented, creative, smart, has so much potential and could become a great cornerstone of the Cavaliers' franchise for many years to come. I've been talking to him a lot this summer about NBA life, and in Cleveland, he's going to learn so much from coach (Byron) Scott." Davis said.
The Former University of California superstar is hoping to show the ropes to Irving. It is always difficult for a rookie to make a quick transition in NBA and Davis is bent upon making Irving journey as smooth as possible.
Irving is also excited to work with the veteran guard;
"I have idolized Baron since I was a kid. He has been in the NBA for so long. He still has the same talent as when he first came in (to the league). What better way to come into the league than with a veteran point guard to learn under?"
Off late, Irving has been busy taking classes for his psychology degree at North Carolina. The young guard played only 11 games in the collegiate season last year because of a turf toe injury and he has still not fully recovered.
Irving has however been working out with his former Duke teammates to stay in shape. Baron’s gesture is a very good omen for the Cavs as two of their star players have already started to develop a chemistry. With Tristan Thompson, the number four draft pick, also in their ranks and many players like Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison rearing to go after last season’s tail spin, the future sure looks bright for the Cavs.
