Baron Davis says he is willing to mentor Cleveland Cavaliers number one pick Kyrie Irving – NBA News
Cleveland Cavaliers veteran point guard Baron Davis would love to help young Kyrie Irving settle into the NBA.
The Cavaliers star has said that he would provide all the guidance rookie point guard Irving needs and help him in fulfilling his enormous potential.
Ever since LeBron James left the Cavaliers for greener pastures last summer, the franchise has been calling out for a new messiah. Many believe Irving could be that guy, with the young point guard rated highly around the league.
He was drafted first overall by the Cavaliers in June despite spending a chunk of last year out with an injury.
Now Davis has declared his intention of helping the youngster on his way to becoming a new hero for Cavs fans. Baron said he suffered early in his career because he didn’t have a guiding figure; therefore he was determined to be
there for Kyrie.
"I want to be there to mentor this kid because I didn't really have that for myself when I came in as a young kid. So my whole thing is about giving back, especially trying to develop and help these young guys become better players,
become better people and do well in the community and their life," he said while talking to ESPN. "So for me, it's an opportunity more so than anything to help someone jump-start their career in the right way."
As a player, Davis has everything. He is someone extremely talented and can be a world beater when he wants to. His talent has though been mostly wasted during a career that saw him turn out with below par teammates and shaky coaches.
Since coming over to the Cavs, he hasn’t been able to stop the rot started by LeBron’s departure. This has led to renewed accusations about the point guard that his head is often not in the game, and there is no doubt that Davis
has much more talent that he displays on occasion.
The player though doesn’t agree with the assertion. He does have a tendency to slag off at times but says when push comes to shove, when everything is on the line, that’s when he plays at his best and with complete commitment to
the cause. He opined that he would be looking to get the Cavaliers and Irving in those positions next season.
"I live for those playoffs, and those playoff games and the atmosphere. My motivation right now working out is to be the best that I can be for any team, especially for the Cleveland Cavaliers and get us to where we need to be,
which is the playoffs."
If the Cavs really do make it to the playoffs next season it could serve as a great learning experience for Irving.
