Baron Davis taking up new roles with New York Knicks as he recovers from injury – NBA News
Baron Davis was brought into the New York Knicks to provide some stability to the back court, and play as a back-up to the younger point guards. However, a serious knee injury that Davis suffered in May this year has him sidelined
from basketball for the foreseeable future, and it is not clear if the 33 year old veteran guard will return to the NBA or not.
Davis is a free agent at the moment, and no team wants to sign a 33 year old player recovering from injury without first seeing whether he is able to fully recover and return to play. This puts Davis' future in the NBA in jeopardy.
However, luckily for Davis, he is going to take a role with the Knicks which will be focused on off-court activities. Davis will not have a title in the organization and will not be court side for Knicks games, but the management
of the franchise has decided to keep him close and involve him in some activities focused on the community as well as player development.
Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com reports:
"Baron Davis will have a multi-faceted role with the Knicks this season: He will spend some time around the team in an advisory role; he will work with Madison Square Garden's "Garden of Dreams" Foundation; he's expected to provide
content for MSG's in-game entertainment and he may do some scouting for the team, according to two sources with knowledge of Davis' agreement with the Knicks. He's currently an unrestricted free agent, but the veteran point guard has maintained close ties
with the team."
Davis would be hoping to get a contract offer from the Knicks once he fully recovers from his injury and it may be his main motivation to stay with the team. However, the Knicks have a loaded roster at the point guard position
with Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni. However, if he is unable to return to the court, the new assignment will help the one guard in his transition into retired life, and may be the jump start he needs to land a front office position with one
of the NBA franchises.
Besides, Davis has always been interested in off the court activities related to basketball and has proven to be a great spokesman for various charitable causes. As far as his return to the NBA as a player is concerned, it all
depends on how he returns from his latest injury, and what he can offer to a prospective team.
