Barrington High School wins by 3-2 against East Greenwich; Reach Division II semi-final: Volleyball
Barrington High School boys volleyball team handed out a defeat to East Greenwich by 3-2 on Friday. By winning the match, the Eagles were able to gain entry into the semi-finals of the 2011 Division Two boys’ volleyball championship tournament.
The quarter-final match between the Avengers and the Eagles took on a competitive and exciting note. The Eagles took time finding their stride as they lost the first set of the game by a considerable margin. However, the next two sets were secured by Barrington
in a convincing fashion while the Avengers rallied back to tie the match by taking the fourth set. With the stakes high, the fifth and final set of the game was a fight to the end which saw the Eagles finally win. The final set scores stood at: 25-15, 25-19,
25-19, 25-17 and 15-9.
Christian Lambert, the head coach of the Eagles, appreciated his team’s efforts and stated after the game, “My guys toughed this one out as a team tonight. They overcame a tough first set loss to win the next two sets. We lost two players in the fourth
set to injury, and rallied around inexperienced players to win the tiebreaker. Wow!”
It will be the first time that the Eagles would be moving on to the semi-finals round that is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. The team that the Eagles will be competing against is the Classical and the venue for the match is Rhode Island College.
The start of the first set of the game saw the Avengers filled with determination which led them to take control of the opening set. The Eagles could not match the competitiveness that the Avengers brought to the court, especially in the serving area. As
a result, it was not a hard job for the Avengers to win the first set of the game at 25-15.
Having lost the initial set by a large margin, the Eagles decided to rally themselves together in an effort to step up their game. They were able to do just that as the Eagles won the set at 25-18. Not only were they successful in making the match reach
a tie, they got themselves into a leading position by securing the third set at 25-19 as well.
The Avengers gave themselves a chance at the quarter-final by taking the fourth set at 25-17 but the Eagles sealed the deal by winning the fifth and final set at 15-9.
Despite the fact that the Eagles will be entering the courts on Tuesday with the confidence of bagging the Two-North regular season title, Barrington needs to step up their game if they want to advance on to the final round as The Purple has a good overall
season record. The performance statistics of The Purple shows them to have earned 13 wins that have been accomplished by suffering four losses.
