  1. Have a look at this site (link posted below), this site list's place names here in England since 1837- 1930 and Barrow-in-Furness is listed, so no  it's hasn't been known as any thing else since at least 1837.

    Hope this helps.

  2. dont know ?

  3. You could have a chat with the Archivists at the nearest Records Office or the Reference Librarian at the main library.

Central libraries carry a Local Studies section and the Reference librarians will probably welcome a chance to do the job they chose to do rather than show people how to use a computer.

1876 is fairly recent - you may be able to find an original name or names, which have changed over the Centuries due to local dialect. e.g. Brigestowe = Bristowe = Bristol, known among the locals as Bristle or Brisul!

  4. Barrow in Furness has be so named since time in memorial. This is how it got its name.

    Barrow in Furness (Cumbria)

Barrow in Furness was once an island and the name may be an old Viking island name Barrey, which is closely related to the name of the island of Barra in the Outer Hebridies. The district of Furness takes its name from the Furness peninsula. Ness means headland and Fur may derive from a personal name.

  5. Try googling the town, it probably has a website that will give at least some history.
