He was offered a contract with the Aston Villa youth side in 2004, where he remained until 2008. He earned a promotion to the senior side soon and went on to sign a two year professional contract with Aston Villa at the end of the 2007-2008 season.
The Scotsman made his debut for the Villains in the group stages of the UEFA Cup against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hamburger-SV-c39485, after being named the Young Player of the Month by a local radio station, which made him the first Aston Villa player to win the award twice.
Bannan was sent out on loan to Derby County on a loan move for a month in 2009 and went on score his debut against Sheffield United. He made a total of ten appearances and scored a single goal for the Rams before returning to the Aston Villa reserve side.
He then spent time with Blackpool and Leeds United on a loan move, finally returning to Villa Park in the 2011-2012 season, where he is expected to stay for the upcoming season. He made 31 appearances in all competitions last season and scored one goal,
he was certain he would go on to do better in the new term.
Bannan said while speaking to reporters:
“It's probably make or break for me this season if I'm being honest.
It's a big, big season. I'm 22 now and I've got to be playing so hopefully I can have a strong pre-season and show the gaffer what I'm about.”
He continued:
“My aim this season is to be one of the main players in this team. I definitely think there's a lot more to come from me and I haven't fulfilled my potential just yet. "I think I've shown it in flashes but not quite enough over a period of time. It's
hard, especially last season as well when we weren't really winning games. It's tough for us.”
