Barry Hawkins books semi-final spot beating Matthew Selt: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
Tremendous game-play from the winner of the 2012 Snooker Shootout, England’s Barry Hawkins, brought him into the semi-final stage of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker event.
The Englishman was up against compatriot Matthew Selt in the quarter-final encounter of the event where he was outstanding at the baize and was able to defeat him by the score line of 5-3.
Selt had a convincing run in the tournament and came to the quarter-final stage after presenting a superb snooker display at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria. He was feeling very confident playing against Hawkins but he could not continue his good form
against his compatriot and tumbled down.
Hawkins, on the other hand, was totally in control and played sensibly throughout the match to nudge his opponent down.
During the proceedings of the quarter-final encounter, the players went neck-and-neck. The first session of the match was quite tussling where the cuemen fought to their best. The face of the game changed in the second session when Hawkins bounced brilliantly
with two frame wins that brought him on top. The Hawk was feeling way happy after making his way into the semi-finals.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Hawkins said, “I thought the game was pretty good. There were a couple of scrappy frames but I definitely cued a bit better today. I started off like I did yesterday, I was a bit ropey but as the game progressed
I started to get a bit of rhythm and I knocked a few breaks in there in the end.”
He added, “I knew Matt would come back at me at 4-1, I thought he'd throw his arm at a few things, he made a couple of nice breaks then to go 4-3.”
Hawkins grabbed a 2-0 early lead to put pressure on his opponent but Selt sprang back with two frame wins firing 65 and 67 breaks and pulled level at 2-2. After that he could win only one frame while Hawkins swept the table in no time to claim the game by
5-3.
Barry will be happy with his performance as he managed to beat Selt and make his way into the semi-finals of the tournament.
