Barry Hawkins overjoyed with 2012 Australian Goldfields Open title victory – Snooker Update
Spectators present at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Australia witnessed some tremendous snooker skills from the winner of the 2012 Snooker Shootout, England’s Barry Hawkins in the final encounter of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament.
The Englishman was up against the former World Snooker Championship winner, compatriot Peter Ebdon and defeated him by the score line of 9-3 to claim his maiden major ranking title.
The clash was supposed to be tougher than any of the matches of the event but it did not go that way. The first session of the match was totally triumphed by the Hawk especially after Ebdon took the first frame. Hawkins cleared the table with brilliant knocks
of 57, 74 and 106 in the next three frames and grabbed the lead by 3-1.
The second session was equally shared between the two potters as both of them clinched two frames each. However, Hawkins did not let Ebdon take any frame in the third session and claimed all four frames to win the match by 9-3. In the last four frames, Hawkins
potted some of the tremendous snooker clearances with 133, 74 and 51 points. The Englishman was very happy after hitting his first major ranking title.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Hawkins said, “Winning my first ranking event feels quite strange. I don't think it has sunk in yet, I feel quite calm. It'll probably sink in more when I get home and see the family. I'm delighted obviously
and it could be a big moment in my career hopefully. I just can't believe it, I'm speechless.”
He added, “The score-line surprised me a little bit because I thought it was going to be a really tough game.”
Hawkins must be overjoyed due to his success because he kept his good form alive from the start of the new snooker season which brought him into the final of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open. It will be exciting to see how far Hawkins can carry his winning
momentum forward and build up some confidence to face some of the top guns in snooker. He will be looking to put in another tremendous performance during the next tournament of the new snooker season.
