Barry Hearn reckons Steve Davis for match room success, takes up Director’s position at Emirates
Barry Hearn is going to take his place in the director’s box at the Emirates and he admits that he is living every man’s dream.
He is one of the most successful persons on the planet and the Hearn’s empire consists of eight different sports. He is the chairman and owner of Leyton Orient since 1985 (Football), PDC chairman (Darts), Manager (Snooker), Manager (Boxing), brains behind
Fish O Mania (Fishing), also backs EuroPro Golf Tour, Chairman (Ten Pin Bowling), Chairman (Crown Green Bowls), Match room chairman (Poker) and Manager (Pool).
Match room has behind his every success and he has said it is hard to say if there would have been any Match room without Steve Davis. He also says that meeting Davis in the mid 1970’s was one of his biggest breaks.
However, now he is into more sports than Mr. Kipling even and is one of the top sports’ promoters.
Berry, who is a Chartered Accountant and moved into the sports in late 60’s, said there would be many for the others but when it comes to snooker there is only one name, ‘Steve Davis.’
He narrated his story and told that when he started off with the sports he had bought a number of derelict snooker halls and exactly when snooker started moving on a bit, Steve walked in, and with his coming into the game, they had a great ride to the top.
Barry Hearn, who is responsible for promoting the likes of Steve Davis, Jimmy White and Dennis Taylor, told when he had bought the halls, they were in such misery, that they could not even afford a pint of milk but with the mind boggling success of Steve
Davis everything was changed.
Steve Davis, six-time world champion, became one of the most dominant players of that era which took the game way up high and brought many people to it. The 1985 world championship final between Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor, also known as the greatest final
ever, drew a record audience of 18.5 million people.
This all gave birth to the Match room which currently is one of the most successful sports promotion businesses in the world.
He also added that Match room has lead him to the Orient. He said if there was no match room the Orient would have never existed, so Steve is also responsible for the Orient.
