Barry Hearn reveals secret behind UK Championship’s return to York Barbican Centre: Snooker News
World Snooker chairman, Barry Hearn has finally revealed the reason behind the return of 2011 UK Championship to the York Barbican Centre. He said that the passion and the love of York’s people was the main reason behind bringing snooker back to York in
the shape of UK Championship 2011.
While speaking to the reporters, Hearn said, “The people in York are the reason why we are going there. I don’t know what happened before but I know we had a very good time there. The facilities have been upgraded enormously.”
He added, “You get this feeling about people. There’s a good reaction when you know people are on your side. There’s a great spirit and we had that from day one with everyone in York. They wanted us to come back and we wanted to come back. We want to move
this into a long-term home for snooker. It’s a great opportunity.”
The announcement about the event’s return to York was made on April 26 by Barry Hearn. The UK Championship has returned to its actual home, York, after five years. It was held at the Barbican Centre from 2001 to 2006 and after that it was moved to the Telford
International Centre, Telford until 2010.
Hearn also said that World Snooker had an overall view of the situation of the game after he took charge of the snooker governing body, and after they were completely satisfied, they decided to move the championship back to York.
He admitted that the previous venue of the UK Championship, the Telford International Centre, was a reasonably successful place for the game. Hearn believes that Barbican Centre in York will be a sensational venue for the upcoming UK Championship, that will
commence from December 3-11 this year.
The top snooker players including the Chinese Ding Junhui and the Englishman, Shaun Murphy, also appreciated World Snooker’s decision to choose York as the UK Championship 2011 host. Both players have played at the venue before and are aware of the environment
at the arena as well as York's love for the game of Snooker.
