Barry Hearn’s proposals accepted by players
Barry Hearn can now give snooker the boost it needs after his proposals were accepted by the players at an extraordinary general meeting in Sheffield today.
Hearn, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, laid out his plans, which includes a Shoot-Out event, a new ranking tournament in Germany, a new Player Tour Championship Series and an increase in prize money.
The players voted 35-29 in favour of Hearn’s proposals. Hearn’s bid was being challenged by John Davison, a former Olympian and retired businessman, who had the support of Stephen Hendry, Peter Ebdon and Ding Junhui.
But Hearn, who was elected chairman last year, will now be fully in charge to guarantee solid foundations for snooker.
“I'm delighted by the outcome. I do not under-estimate the challenges that lie ahead, but for the moment snooker is united and the future looks rosy.
"I owe the game a lot and I will make sure that I will be giving a hundred per cent every day to bring it to the level at which it should be operating,” said Hearn.
