Barry Lane finishes tied for the second position at the MCB Tour Championship
England’s Barry Lane finished tied for the second position at the European Seniors Tour’s season-ending MCB Tour Championship, after he closed his final round with a sparkling eagle on the 18th hole.
The tournament was being played at Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius, featuring a number of top-notch players from different parts of the world. The MCB Tour Championship is known for attracting a strong field every year.
This year too, the tournament reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the two-time seniors’ major champion Roger Chapman, the reigning Charles Schwab Cup winner Tom Lehman and the 2011 European Seniors Tour Order of Merit champion Peter Fowler.
Entering the final round in Mauritius, Lane was trailing the leader David Frost by five strokes. Meanwhile, when Frost faltered for a two-over par 74 in the final round, Lane tried to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
However, his shaky start did not allow him to make a strong charge, as he mixed three birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine.
Thereafter, he birdied the 10th and the 11th hole, prior to conceding another bogey of the day on the 13th hole.
Entering the final hole, he was trailing Frost by three shots. Consequently, he desperately needed an albatross to force the game to enter into the playoffs.
The Englishman did his best to make it to the top of the leaderboard. However, luck was not at his side, as he only managed to tap in the ball for an eagle.
At the end of the day, he found himself sharing the second position with Fowler, who carded a four-under par 68 to post a 10-under par tournament score.
“David let us in really with a triple and a double, but I missed an awful lot of putts today,” said the former Ryder Cup player. “I was always battling but my double bogey on the eighth was a shame but then I chipped in on the last”.
He added, “That’s the game though and I tried my best. It’s great to finish second here, second in the Order of Merit, and it’s been another great year”.
