Barry Lane wins Speedy Services Wales Senior Open
Barry Lane carded a two-under par 70 in the final round of the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open and took the title home, after taking a one-stroke victory over Philip Golding on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
Golding, the overnight leader, handed over the lead to Lane early in the round by suffering two bogeys on the first three holes that he played.
The round witnessed a strong competition afterwards. However, Lane succeeded in taking the commanding lead of two strokes, heading to the final hole of the day.
On the 18th green, Golding once again received a chance of making a comeback in the game by turning in the ball for a birdie from 12 feet, which he missed in the end.
Meanwhile, Lane missed the par putt and settled for a bogey. Yet, it did not hurt him, as he still had a one stroke margin over his rival.
“It’s a very good standard out here, so it’s always nice to get a win,” said Lane. “It’s never easy and it wasn’t today with Phil and Peter Fowler pushing me all the way”.
“No-one was really pulling away and then I hit such a great shot into the 17th which gave me a nice cushion into 18,” he said. “It was always going to be one or two shots in it, and it was always going to come down to those final three holes which are so
tough. …I’ve played pretty well this year so it’s nice to get the reward”.
Lane started off slowly at the Conwy Golf Club and parred each of the first nine holes that he played. His back-nine performance was a little better and he managed to sign three birdies against a lone bogey for his fourth European Senior Tour title.
Golding, in the meantime, was disappointed with his performance, especially after draining eight straight birdies during the first round. It also set the record of most number of birdies in a row on the European Senior Tour.
On Friday, he birdied each of the last 10 holes except the 17th, where he suffered a bogey. His first round score was eight-under par 64.
