Barry Markus wins first stage of Vuelta Ciclista a Leon 2011 - Cycling News
Rabobank Continental team’s Barry Markus showed a brilliant effort in the opening stage of Vuelta Ciclista a Leon 2011 on Tuesday, August 2.
The race started in La Robla and ended in Lorenzana. The 20-year-old Dutch road bicycle racer took the total of 3 hours, 20 minutes and 32 seconds to cover the distance of 150 kilometres.
Roy Hegreberg of Sparebanken Vest – Ridley was runner-up and Filip Eidsheim of Sparebanken Vest – Ridley finished third with the same timing of Nederland.
Marcos Gallego (Frio Julymar) showed his tremendous performance in the front of the stage and tried to catch the leading riders but failed to maintain his pace and secured 110th place with the difference of 33 seconds ahead of Eder Freyre and
Jose Alberto Nocete.
With 39 kilometres to go, the cyclists formed a breakaway lead including Wesley Kreder (Rabobank Continental Team), Kristian House (Rapha Condor – Sharp) and Johan Ziesler (Sparebanken Vest – Ridley).
They managed to gain a lead over the peloton while Kristian House launched attack but unable to maintain his pace as Kreder took the first sprint of the stage.
With 96 kilometres remaining, the trio was caught by the peloton and a new group is formed. The two cyclists Vicente G.De Mateos (Caja Rural) and Dan Craven (Rapha Condor-Sharp) worked together to follow Frode Solberg. However, Solberg took the second sprint
with 3 points.
In First Mountain of the stage, David Abal gained points and took a lead while Ian Bibby followed him and took the other climb but Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Rapha Condor- Sharp) launched an attack and took the final climb.
However, Ian Bibby (Motorpoint) took the overall King of Mountain title ahead of Jonathan while Wesley Kreder took the overall sprint standing with 3 points and Frode Solberg was in second spot and Vicente G.De Mateos managed third place.
Twelve cyclists including, Fabio Pais (Liberty Seguros-S.M.Feira), Vasco Pereira (Liberty Seguros-S.M.Feira) and Juan A. Gallego (Extremadura Spiuk) was disqualified.
The next stage will start in Alija Del Inf and end in Veguelilla De Orbrigo. All the cyclists will cover the distance of 85 kilometres.
