Barry McGuigan believes it is too early for Amir Khan to take on Floyd Mayweather – Boxing news
Former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan believes it is still too early for the currently unified World Boxing Association Super and International Boxing Federation Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan, to take on a world title fight with the
undefeated American legend, Floyd Mayweather.
The Bolton’s finest Amir ‘King’ Khan is keen to have a mega showdown with the American superstar Mayweather junior, who holds an incredible undefeated record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout,
as the Brit reckons he has the right technique to beat Mayweather in the ring.
The 50-year-old Clones Cyclone, McGuigan, told the media Khan needs at least one more year before he sets up a mega clash with Mayweather.
Khan, who is set to take on Lamont Peterson on December 10, 2011 before he moves up to 147lbs division, took a terrible beating from Marcos Maidana in their WBA world light welterweight championship match, which was held back in December 2010. Though Khan
retained his title via unanimous decision, McGuigan still doubts if Khan can hold a full-fledged welterweight shot.
“It’s still too early for him [Khan]. He needs another year. Mayweather will not be coming down to 140 lbs so that means Khan must go to welter. Before he takes on Mayweather, he needs to show that he can hold a shot from a fully-fledged welter and take
them out. That means one or two fights at the weight against top class opposition,” McGuigan wrote in his column on mirror.co.uk.
Floyd Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, on the same note also wants Khan to prove himself by beating Jessie Vargas.
Mayweather was formerly rated as the number one pound-for-pound boxer in the world by the world before he was removed from the rankings due to inactivity.
Khan on the other hand is rated as the British number one pound-for-pound boxer. Therefore, a clash between these two will certainly be a big one. Let’s see if it takes place.
