Barry Zito will star for San Francisco Giants in World Series Game-1 – MLB World Series Update
San Francisco Giants' talented starter Barry Zito has been selected to throw in Game 1 of their seven-match World Series clash against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, October 24 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California
“I couldn't be happier for him. It says a lot about his mental toughness, his makeup, For him to keep grinding, as we say, and trying to get better, for him to be at this point and starting the first game, I was really glad, proud to tell him that," San Francisco Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said on Tuesday regarding Zito.
Earlier news came that Giants are little confused over their selection of potential starter for Game 1 but now it has been decided as Zito will be facing a tough test on Wednesday.
"It's not important to reflect right now. There's work to do, I'm going to be on the mound here in the next 24 hours, so that's where my focus is at, it was a big game, I just knew that we had to get the series back to San Francisco,” Zito said.
On the other hand, the Tigers have already unveiled that ace starter Justin Verlander will be starting Game 1 for Detroit at Giants home field.
This is not like Zito has not been tested before in the post-season, in fact he has played Game 5 of their seven-match National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, October 19 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Zito did well in this particular game and literally won the game for the Giants. He pitched 7.2 innings and did not give any run on six hits. He struck-out six while he remained consistent on the mound during his entire spell.
Not only in the post-season, Zito has also been playing well throughout this past Major League regular season. He is currently playing at 4.15 ERA along with 15-8 win-loss record, 114 strike-outs and 1.39 WHIP. While his 12-year career of 3.93 ERA along with 160-132 win-loss, 1797 strike-outs and 1.31 WHIP also makes him a good role player in the Giants as well as in the league.
