Bart Wellens freed from the doping allegations, media reports
Bart Wellens was rushed to the hospital with high fever on the night before the Belgian cyclo-cross championships.
The cyclist was accused of doping but the Belgian court has now cleared him from all the allegations.
The hair and blood samples taken by the court returned in the favour of the Belgian as reported by Gazet Van Antwerpen.
Bart’s physician Peter Seyen has clarified that he was admitted because of the inflammation of the heart muscle and had nothing to do with doping.
He welcomed the court’s decision. "This allows us to now say with confidence that it is absolutely impossible that bad things have happened here, as has unfortunately been suggested," he noted.
Peter further added, "There is no indication so we strongly refute it. A virus is the cause of all misery".
The 33-year-old started riding professionally with Fidea Cycling Team in 2004 and has stayed with the side throughout the 9 years of his professional career.
He holds two gold and one silver medal under his belt during the 2003, 2004 and 2007 versions of the World Championships.
Wellens claimed the Belgian National Cyclo-cross Championships on three occasions (2000, 2005 and 2007) including a UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup victory in 2003.
He also achieved the top podium spot during the Superprestige and the Gazet van Antwerpen Trophy 2004.
Bart was relieved after hearing the court’s decision and is looking to mark his return in the near future. "This is proof that I had nothing to do and that I had always been honest," he said.
He was taken to hospital in January and the court started searching his house in February 2012. His blood and hair samples were inspected by the officials and now the final decision has been announced by the jury.
The court also ordered to check the cyclist’s house as in order to remove the suspicions related to Luc Van den Broeck, the manufacturer of the CONCAP dietary supplements.
Another cyclist Kevin Cant and Wellens’ brother Geert was also involved in the investigation. The jury tested them both but their blood results came out negative and they were freed immediately.
