Bartolo Colon shines as Oakland Athletics rout Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 – MLB Update
Oakland Athletics crushed the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Thursday, August 2 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The A’s continued their impressive run on Thursday to register another emphatic victory. With more wins than any other team, they have remained the hottest unit in MLB after the All Streak Break.
After their win over the Blue Jays on Thursday, Oakland has now taken the second place on the American League West Division standings, just four games behind the league leaders Texas Rangers.
Seth Smith had a decent time on the home-plate as he singled to right in the third inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. Josh Reddick also made the most of available opportunities. His home run to right in the third inning gave the
Athletics a crucial 3-0 lead.
Former Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Brandon Inge singled to left in the seventh to keep Oakland in the driving seat. Starting pitcher Bartolo Colon overcame a shaky start to grab his eighth win of the season. Bartolo gave up seven hits without a run in
eight solid innings to set up an easy win for his team.
"I don't pay much attention to it," said Colon. "It's more important for me to do the best that I can when I'm on the mound and let the team do whatever they want."
"Early in the game I didn't know if he had his best stuff, to tell you the truth," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "I don't know if our gun was off today, but you saw a lot of 86s, 87s (mph), which you don't normally see out of him. But he finds a way. He makes
you make the adjustment."
Manager Bob Melvin deserves a lot of credit for keeping his team focused even during the most testing times this season. It seems the A’s have found the confidence they were lacking in early stages of the season. Only the time will tell if they can continue
their excellent form to reach the playoffs.
